This is not an area just for "old" people. Actually, there is no time like the present to take a look at your estate planning needs. At a minimum, make sure you have a will, especially if you have children. With all of the travel that a professional athlete endures, not to mention the risk of playing professional sports, you cannot take life for granted. Estate planning should be considered periodically throughout your lifetime and adjusted accordingly based on the size of your estate, number of children, and other events that have a tendency to spring up on us. Also keep in mind that players can have an estate tax problem early in their lives due to bonuses and high earnings in a relatively short period of time. And don't let Congress fool you - the recent "repeal" of the estate tax does not equate to ignoring estate tax-related issues.
